Dec. 16, 2014- Updated Dec. 29- George County, MS – It is with great sorrow that we announce the line of duty death of Deputy John Robert Street, 24. Shortly before 2 a.m. on Dec. 16, while responding to an accident on Highway 57 North, that Deputy Street was killed when his vehicle left the road and struck a tree.
Sheriff Dean Howell says, “We lost one of our own when Deputy John Street died in the line of duty responding to an accident. During this time of grief as we laid our fallen hero to rest, we again experienced the bond between law enforcement officers. The Sheriff is the "Chief Law Enforcement Officer" for the County. The Sheriff's duties generally fall into two broad important categories - Law Enforcement and Administrative.
These duties are specifically to keep the peace within the county, by causing all offenders in his view to enter into bonds, with sureties, appearing and keeping the peace in circuit court, and by committing such offenders in case of refusal. The sheriff is also charged with the duty to quell riots, routs, affrays and unlawful assemblages.
