Dec. 16, 2014 Update-George County, MS – It is with great sorrow that we announce the line of duty death of Deputy John Robert Street, 24. Shortly before 2 a.m. this morning, while responding to an accident on Highway 57 North, that Deputy Street was killed when his vehicle left the road and struck a tree. Read more here.
The Sheriff's duties generally fall into two broad categories - Law Enforcement and Administrative. These duties are specifically to keep the peace within the county, by causing all offenders in his view to enter into bonds, with sureties, appearing and keeping the peace in circuit court, and by committing such offenders in case of refusal. The sheriff is also charged with the duty to quell riots, routs, affrays and unlawful assemblages.
